I have a sugar maple tree that the bark is pulling away from the trunk. It is just falling off and I don't see any ants or anything. What is going on with it and what can I do with it. It started from a seed in our vegetable garden is now about 30 ft. tall.

There are kinds of maple trees that are native to Europe, China and Japan. I do not know the exact names though.

When I was a child, we called the 'seeds' keys, but nobody knows what I'm talking about when I say that. I have heard them called 'helicopters' but I'm curious as to the official name.

Hi

I recently moved into a house out in the country which has a large acacia tree in the back yard. It had not been lived in so the acacia has taken over, and I am slowly taking out all the growth spurts covering the yard. My question is regarding the fast growing maple trees. If I were to take out the acacia, and replace it with a fast growing maple, about how fast does it gain it's height? It would be best if I could get something within 20 feet as soon as possible to obtain the look of the yard my family would like.

Thanks

I suggest the October Glory Red Maple. See our maple tree store, we have them for sale there.

My husband and I are building a new home and trying to decide on the best maple trees for our yard. I did not see the Autumn Blaze Maple on your list. What do you know about it and what would you recommend for Kansas?

I appreciate your detailed information on the various maples. As I look out my family room window, I can see either black or sugar maples and I know that I have red maples because of the spring seeds. We have plenty of silver maples growing on the creek banks and some on the golf courses. I will consult with your site next spring to try and sort out my black and sugar maples. One thing that I did not see on your color chart page was reference to brilliant yellow fall colors. My dad had a native maple that was a brilliant yellow (Monroe County, Indiana).

Fall color is specific to location and species. Plant the tree in one location and it will be orange in fall, the same tree in another location will be yellow. Some Maples display mostly yellow such as the silver maple though I have seen them display orange fall color also but not as nice as a Sugar Maple or Red Maple.

I am sorry but the tree may well die and nothing may be done. You can try and call a tree surgeon but be careful as these guys will want to cut on the tree and will give you no guarantee it will live but will give you a big bill to pay.

I would just wait a year or two and time will tell.
