The Silver Maple tree, Acer Saccharinum, is a medium to large fast growing tree.

The Silver Maple is ideal for most sites even wet or bottomland sites where a large tree is needed. The Silver Maple can easily recover from extended periods of flooding. It is one of the best trees for poor soil and also transplants very easily.

The wood of this maple tree is soft and can be damaged by severe winds or ice storms. The Silver Maple is often used in residential areas for shade because of its thick foliage, fast growth and large size.

The form of the silver maple is multi stemmed unless trimmed with a single trunk in mind. See photos at left for examples.

This deciduous maple tree provides very dense shade. The Silver Maple's Fall Color is more yellow with some orange. Fall color is classed as low to medium. The Silver Maple photo at top of page is exceptional as most are more yellow. Keep this in mind when choosing your tree.

Remember do not plant a silver maple close to your house as in 10 to 15 years you will suffer the expense and cost of removing the tree as it will just keep growing and growing until it damages your house.

If you have room to allow this tree to expand to its full glory and do not need or desire extreme fall color then chose the silver maple.

The silver maple is not a tree normally used for Bonsai. There are always exceptions but when you search Google under silver maple bonsai and find nothing there must be a reason.

Main reason to plant: Very fast growth and large tree size.
